Background for “Destinations’                                                                           dave_gasser

This pre-amble is included to explain the various parameters implicit in the various “Destinations”. In every case I have spent at least one night at anchor there. Our boat draws roughly 2 metres (m) and I choose all my anchorages for a minimum depth of 4m. Unless bad weather is forecast. I use a scope of 4 or 5 to 1 with a kellet due to the small areas of the anchorages and/or the usual summer crowding. The lat and long given for the location is that of the chosen anchor position and is accurate to within 20m (.01 nm). All depths are from chart datum. Please note that Canadian and US chart datums are different with the US datum being approximately 1.5m or more higher than the Canadian datum. This means that minus tides are much more common and careful attention must be paid to the tide tables. Do NOT use tide tables from one country and charts from another. In cases where I recommend the use of a particular type of anchor, that recommendation is based on bottom conditions in the anchorage ie weed, rock, etc..

DESTINATION – Viner Sound

Charts – 3576, 3557, 3515

Position – 50 47.3 N, 126 25.0 W. Coves at 50 47.3 N, 126 23 W and 50 47.1 N, 126 22.9 W. Viner Sound is 5nm ENE of Echo Bay on Gilford Island.

Description – A small (about 2nm long) inlet of the south side of Hornet Passage. The BC Forest Service has placed two mooring buoys in each of the above coves for public use. Each of the buoys has a long and strong mooring pennant.

Navigation – Straightforward. Currents are minimal but westerlies do funnel up the sound mostly missing the two coves.

Facilities – the buoys and, in the northern cove, a wilderness campsite with a firepit and pit toilet. The campsite is on the west side of the cove near the entrance.

Recommendations – A great place to unwind. The north cove has a black bear who is a regular visitor at low tide on sunny days – a very particular and peculiar bear.
